Serving a mission for my church in Berlin, Germany, I became especially fond of Isaiah 49:15-16, wherein the Lord promises his people:
“Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.
Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.”
The image of walls–walls other people put up to keep us away, or more often, the walls that we put up around our own hearts to keep people and sometimes our own Savior out–was an imagery that was very, very real to me in Berlin, a city which had been literally walled off–with the wall sometimes separating families and loved ones from each other. The promise that, despite our walls, we will not be forgotten was very meaningful to me.
This song is an original composition on that theme. The demands on the singers are more advanced than some of the other music I have written, requiring a stronger, more experienced choir.
