My enjoyment of music multiplies the moment I participate in making that music, and it is for this reason that I love writing congregational accompaniments! In a congregation’s Christmas or Easter program, a dressed up accompaniment allows the congregation to actively participate in the festive music making rather than just be passive listeners!
Sally DeFord has many nice congregational accompaniments for Christmas and a couple for Easter, but since I wanted more, I arranged “Still, Still, Still” for congregation, organ and piano. “Still, Still, Still” is a beloved German/Austrian Christmas carol, and I learned to love it while serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Berlin Germany. In German the word “Stille” has the double meaning of both quiet-ness, but also breastfeeding a baby. In German the double meaning of the lyrics convey a closeness, an intimacy which is somewhat lost in the English translation, but regardless it is still a beautiful song, shimmering with the stillness of drifting snow and the sacred quietness of that holy night.
